The evening

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan stopped at The Peninsula Paris. Sonia stepped out wearing a silk blindfold, with her partner beside her. She was expecting a birthday dinner. Nadia met them at the entrance and took them upstairs to the Rooftop Eiffel Suite.

Her birthday invitation gave her a time for dinner. The address was left off the card.

At the foot of the suite’s staircase, the blindfold came off. Candles stood on either side; rose petals marked the steps. The terrace was still out of sight. Violin and harp played above as they climbed toward the last blue light over Paris.

At the top waited red flowers, red velvet chairs and a table dressed in gold. The Eiffel Tower rose beyond the terrace. Her gold birthday cake was already on the table. The ring was still hidden.

At 10 p.m., as the Eiffel Tower began to sparkle, the welcome service held a second surprise. The butler brought a covered dish. When the smoke cleared, Sonia saw the ring. He asked her to marry him. She said yes.

Portraits followed on the terrace, then dinner from chef David Bizet’s menu. At 11 p.m., the Tower sparkled again and the candles on her gold cake were lit.

The suite was theirs for the night; going back was their choice.

How we planned two reveals at one address

From pink to red and gold

Her partner first asked for pink décor, Sonia’s favorite color. As he and Nadia talked through the evening in Russian, he described her as his queen. That led them to red velvet and gold, with flowers throughout the terrace.

Birthday candles among the flowers

The birthday plan began with cake, balloons and invitations delivered to their room at the Plaza Athénée. The invitations gave a time for dinner, but no address. On the terrace, Nadia placed tall candles among the flowers as a reference to birthday candles. The gold cake was already on the table when Sonia arrived.

The staircase kept the terrace out of sight

The blindfold came off at the foot of the stairs. Sonia could see the candles and petals before she could see the table or the view. The climb was planned for blue hour, with violin and harp playing above. Nadia positioned the table for photographs with the Tower behind the couple and kept the service route clear of the candle path.

The ring arrived through the dinner service

A covered dish and smoke concealed the ring. Until the smoke cleared, the presentation could still be part of Sonia’s birthday dinner. The surprise depended on the service: the ring had to arrive at the agreed cue, with time for Sonia to see it before her partner spoke.

Bringing the question forward

The original plan was to propose at the end of dinner. Shortly before the evening began, he took our advice to ask first, and Nadia worked with the L’Oiseau Blanc team to bring the ring presentation and smoke effect forward.

Planned in Russian, with Nadia

Sonia’s partner planned the evening with Nadia in Russian. Their twelve-page client brief was written in Russian too, from the dinner menu and arrival instructions to the timing of the ring presentation.

He could read through the plan in his own language, including where to remove the blindfold and which signal to wait for at the table. Nadia coordinated those instructions with the hotel service, flowers, musicians, photography and film.

Торт: на столе с 21:45; свечи зажигают в 23:00, на втором мерцании.

From the Russian-language event brief

“Cake: on the table from 9:45 p.m.; candles lit at 11 p.m., on the second sparkle.”

Why the Rooftop Eiffel Suite?

Her partner wanted a fully private roof garden, a clear Eiffel Tower view and French cuisine for dinner. He had one further request: Sonia should not see a bed when she arrived.

The Rooftop Eiffel Suite’s layout allowed them to reach its 91 m² (about 980 sq ft) roof garden through the sitting area, with the bedroom out of sight. They reserved the suite for the celebration and kept their room at the Plaza Athénée.

The route to this roof garden passed through the suite’s sitting area, with the bedroom out of sight.

The suite must be reserved for the night. Its private terrace comes with that reservation; sleeping there is your choice. For a terrace booked by time slot, explore The Peninsula’s Secret Table.

Full-service planning brings the reservation, design, surprise and dinner together.
